Sleeping Safely in Pregnancy: What You Need to Know

Navigating through pregnancy means being mindful of even the smallest details – including how you sleep.

Recent studies have brought to light a concerning fact which indicates that back sleeping could DOUBLE the risk of stillbirth. Yikes..

Let's explore why and how you can keep you and your baby safe.

This comprehensive study analyzed data from 22 studies involving over 300,000 pregnancies about sleep position.

The Science Behind the Sleep Position

A 2019 meta-analysis published in the ("Lancet medical journal") found that women who reported sleeping on their backs in late pregnancy had a 2.63 times higher risk of stillbirth compared to those who slept on their sides. Yikes!

This happens because lying supine (fancy word for "back") can compress major blood vessels, reducing blood flow to both you and your precious little one.

Research finds that sleeping on your side promotes optimal blood circulation, boosts oxygen delivery to your baby, and even eases back pain and heartburn.

Back sleeping can compress blood vessels and restrict bloodflow (see figure 1). Side sleeping with good support keeps blood flowing freely (see figure 2).
